Female Athletes Who Practice Discipline…WIN.

Female Athletes Who Practice Discipline…WIN.

Self discipline sets you free.

This quote is an inherent contradiction.

The word discipline means “obey a set of rules,” while the word free means “no longer confined.”

How can discipline, an act of structure and routine, also be liberating and carefree at the same time? How can female athletes be set free by following guidelines and rules?

You see, to be great in sports, everything comes at a cost.

There is never a free pass. To get to where you want to go, to be the fastest and most powerful athlete, to shine above the rest, and to be the most empowered athlete out there, you need to stay disciplined.

The most disciplined athletes:

– Set clear goals
– Stick to their daily routines
– Avoid distractions
– Develop healthy nutrition, sleep and training habits
– Get excited about the boring things
– Stay unwavering in their routine

Self discipline sets you free.

It’s an incredibly potent mantra that will change your life. It reminds you that anything meaningful you pursue will come at a cost, and a little bit of pain along the way.

However, when you ask yourself if the annoyance of discipline is worth it, in most scenarios, that answer is a strong yes.

Would you rather deal with the meager pain of discipline, or the massive pain of regret?

Would you rather deal with the pain of taking time to prepare your meals, or the cost of being malnourished and under fueled for a tournament?

Would you rather deal with the pain of getting up earlier to do your strength workouts, or the pain of being weak and not resilient for the demands of your sport?

Would you rather deal with the pain of being diligent about your workout and homework schedule and organizing your calendar, or the pain of being stressed and feeling like you don’t have enough time for everything?

Would you rather deal with the pain of taking 30 minutes out of your day to do a recovery workout, or the pain of continued muscle soreness?

In the end, discipline only frees you.

It frees you because you’re so prepared, your body is robust for competition. Too, your mind is at peace because you know you put in the work on the back-end and can be present in a game.

Discipline sets you free because you come out of your meticulous regimen empowered, strong, and confident. If you lack discipline, it will leave you feeling precarious, chaotic and insecure.

You can’t just wing it.

You can’t get away with being all over the place and not following some set of guidelines and routine. Yes, it might feel like you’re caged by discipline, but it is worth it.

Otherwise, you have no option but to trade one cage for the other, and you become enslaved by something else: chasing feel good quick fixes that aren’t sustainable for your performance, and that don’t make you your strongest, most nourished, most confident self.

Choose your pain. Everything comes at a cost.
